Gay goes CBC ...
They met over two decades ago and have been inseparable ever since, both at home and in front of the camera . . . Steven Sabados and Chirs Hyndman, that is. They have recently begun their biggest adventure ever, an hour long daytime television talk show on CBC covering just about anything and everything.
Steven, 42 the youngest of four was raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He worked summers at Bright’s bottling sparkling wines and took fine arts at Fanshawe College before he heard Toronto calling his name. In the big TO he designed window and store displays for Eaton’s and Roots Canada. Later he became a most sought after regular on City Line with Marilyn Denis. From that show came guest appearances on several HGTV shows and that led to the eventual launch of, “Designer Guys”.
Chris, 41 an only child was raised in St.John’s, Newfoundland (the rock) an east coaster. He often gave fashion advice to his Mom’s friends and they loved it. This sowed the seed for his later flair and penchant for fashion, makeup and design. He too heard the call of the big city and headed west to Toronto to become a makeup artist.
Through friends, east me west, and there you have it Canadian “gay” icons – Steven and Chris. Steve is the serious one with both feet on the ground, the thinker. Chris is the fun, not so serious one always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Face it if they were both cookie cutter identical then what would the fun be in that. It’s their obvious differences that make us like them. They each have their own point of view and it’s that which will make this show a success.
They first teamed up on the award winning HGTV show, Designer Guys. Their tag team antics worked there, albeit the show was primarily focused on decorating the home, so I am confident it will work in this expanded format as well.
I sincerely hope they don’t forget their roots, their “gay” community. It is so disappointing when members of our community become famous and they forget where they came from. I am hoping Steven and Chris don’t forget. I am hoping that they will support and address gay issues on their new show now that they have the national stage. I am not suggesting talking “gay” on every single show but only when there is an issue or a concern that they give it some air time.
I wish them success in their new endeavour and look forward to seeing the shows . . . so guys, break a leg . . .
